Ringtones have long been a fun way to personalize your cell phone and display your individual style while still receiving calls in an unobtrusive manner. More people are frequently utilizing custom ringtones rather than the standard pre-loaded melodies that come on their phones. And there's a whole lot of ringtones available and just as many different ways to get them. This has resulted in more cell users than ever finding creative ways to access ringtones through a computer. Here are some examples:

Android: There are countless ringtone downloads available for your android handset. Most of these can be found in the "My Files" section and most often you will need an application like cyanogenmod-rom-downloader to download them. There are several examples of ringtones you can download for free if you know where they are. If you don't, Google will usually provide an example in their downloads section. As with any other app, just because it's free doesn't mean it's bad - far from it.

Windows Phone 8: Nokia's Windows Mobile offers similar functionality when it comes to ringtones. As with most things Windows based, there is also a wealth of ringtone download choices. However, unlike Windows Mobile, Nokia's default ringtones aren't part of the operating system and must be installed separately. When searching for them on Nokia's web site you'll see a slew of different ringtone choices, but you also have to search for the ringtone individually. Many people prefer to use the web and having access to a huge database of ringtones one-stop-shop type of way. You can also go into any cell phone shop or electronic store and browse through ringtones by manufacturer and see what's available.

Android: Free ringtone downloads on Android devices are almost unheard of, although it is not completely impossible. As with the iPhone, many free ringtone downloads are ringtone mono (the same tone) or polyphonic (a variety of tones with different pitches). Some ringtone downloads on Android devices are actually part of general software packages such as a camcorder or audio recorder programs. Most of these free ringtone downloads are pure audio files with no visual representations (unless they're part of special software), so they may not exactly blend in with your current visual theme.

There are some ringtone download apps that are specifically dedicated to android phones and certain carriers. These ringtones can usually be purchased as a subscription within the program or downloaded for free. Since ringtones are being introduced all the time, the availability and creation of new ringtones for all devices seem endless.

Ringtones can be arranged in folders to organize them by frequency (for example C2C frequencies) or type (for example jogging, rock, Christian, etc.). They can also be arranged based on purposes (like reminders, birthday reminders, missed calls, and so on). A good folder software allows you to easily browse through your ringtones folder and find exactly what you want. You'll get the best results if your ringtone file comes with metadata including the duration, pitch, style, and genre. A good manager will even allow you to choose file formats for your ringtones such as mp3 or wma.
