Anywhere you go nowadays, whether it be your local pharmacy, grocery store or corner gas station, you’ll see products boasting their antioxidant ingredients.
We’ve been taught since early childhood that antioxidants are some wonder-substance, capable of fighting off ill health.
The logical next question, however, becomes “why?” and “how?” Perhaps not so surprisingly, when you ask someone these questions, they simply offer a shrug.
It’s worth taking a look into, in order to better understand the properties that antioxidants have, where they come from and how they help.
Antioxidants, at the core of their function, are chemicals that help our bodies prevent or hinder cell death. So, what causes cell death? Well, unfortunately, there’s a lot out there that’s not so good for our health and wellbeing. One of the primary factors toward cell death is free radicals.
Free radicals are the byproduct of environmental toxins (i.e. electromagnetic frequencies, radiation, smoke, etc.); they are molecules produced as a result of our bodies breaking down food for energy.
Moreover, free radicals are a result of our bodies’ exposure to oxidation (exposure to oxygen) that can break atoms and, in turn, leave them with unpaired electrons.
What happens as a result is that these unstable atoms then becomes dangerously disruptive, attacking healthy cells to take away their electrons. It’s an endless process which, if not treated correctly, can lead to severe cell death.
When asked about the process of oxidative damage, Dr. Roy Lidke, highly-regarded physicist and podiatrist, explained that:
“If this release of reactive oxygen species gets carried away, we call this oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is related to cell damage in the inflammatory process, heart disease, cancer, and the aging process and can eventually lead to cell death.”
That’s where antioxidants come knocking.
Antioxidants are certain substances that may help in protecting healthy cells from the damage caused by free radicals. In essence, what antioxidants do is give an electron to those unstable atoms in need.
So, what’s the solution? What can people do to avoid free radical damage and maintain a balanced internal system?
The human body performs most optimally when it is balanced with an adequate supply of electrons available to it. Electrons, in and of themselves, provide the negative potential that the human body needs to sustain a stable, internal bioelectrical “environment.”
Some may call these electrons a natural source of “antioxidants.”
Consumers have become accustomed to finding their source of antioxidants and electrons in the variety of foods and man-made supplements. Those work, but they’re not the only solution. An often overlooked solution to antioxidants is the greatest source of healing available to us – the earth’s surface.
The earth’s surface possesses a nearly limitless supply of free electrons. This supply is consistently maintained (replenished) due to it being electrically conductive with its atmospheric electrical circuit (i.e. being struck by lightning at the equator thousands of times each minute).
The medical community has come to recognize this phenomenon and studies have recently been conducted to better measure and understand the benefits of being in contact with the earth’s surface or walking barefoot – also known as “earthing.”
Dr. Alan Christianson, an Integrative Health Specialist in the Scottsdale, AZ area is one of the many doctors who understand and appreciate the concept of Earthing.
With respect to his own practice, Dr. Christianson went on to say that:
“I know that many of my patients suffering from various ailments also spend a lot of time indoors and with inactive lifestyles. Something as simple as adding grounding to your daily routine can work wonders upon the rest of your day and the rest of your life.”
These studies have suggested that, by allowing for an influx of electrons into the body, the Earth’s potential assists in stabilizing the electrical “environment” for organs, tissues, and cells.
Think of the earth’s natural surface as a “power source” in that respect. When in direct contact with it, our bodies are able to maintain healthy, homeostatic level of electrons and compensate for any lost as a result of free radical stress.
While the theories associated with barefoot benefits are age-old, they have only been put into practice and recognized in recent years.
When you’re considering your need for antioxidants next, put down your wallet and don’t go to the grocery store right away. Slip your shoes off and step outside, so that you can allow your body to absorb the electrons (“antioxidants”) on the Earth’s surface. You may just feel a heck of a lot better afterward.
