“Earthing” simply means to physically reconnect with the earth. Walking barefoot, laying in the grass, and hugging a tree are all examples of earthing, and these practices have been gaining significant attention in the medical community due to its surprising influence on biological health and its simple application.
It turns out that walking barefoot in the grass can prevent and even cure disease, amongst a whole host of other health benefits that we will look at.
So how exactly does this work?
The key is the transference of electrons on the surface of the earth into the skin.
“Direct physical contact with the vast supply of electrons on the surface of the Earth. Modern lifestyle separates humans from such contact. The research suggests that this disconnect may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and unwellness.
Reconnection with the Earth’s electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being.
Earthing (or grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits—including better sleep and reduced pain—from walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth’s electrons from the ground into the body.”
The abundance of electrons causes improved sleep, reduced pain, and lowered stress levels for example.
Grounding also appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events by lowering red blood cell aggregation and reducing blood clumping. Walking on the grass barefoot can actually help protect you against the world’s number one killer of cardiovascular disease.
You know how your muscles get sore a day or two after exercising? Ground appears to be the first intervention with the potential to reduce the time of recovery and improve muscle function from a state of muscle soreness.
It impacts both the objective and subjective experience of muscle pain, and is a great way to provide relief and aid in the repair of tissue damage.
Blood oxygenation, respiratory rate, and pulse rate are all affected by grounding as well. Researcher Dr. Gaetan Chevalier concluded:
“This could be an important result that can lead to methods for improving people’s health naturally and to cut health care costs by preventing a host of problems and diseases related to stress”.
Earthing can also decrease inflammation and lower blood pressure by normalizing the functions of the nervous system.
An interesting study was done where 12 subjects with complaints of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were grounded to earth during sleep for 8 weeks in their own beds using a conductive mattress pad.
Subjectively reported symptoms such as sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress, were reduced or eliminated in nearly all subjects. There was also a normalization in cortisol secretion.
Why not take advantage of such an effortless and inexpensive medicine? As mentioned, earthing can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, lower your blood pressure, decrease stress and your experience of pain, help repair muscle tissue, and improve your sleep and blood oxygenation.
With the amount of money we spend on prescription and over-the-counter drugs, we owe it to ourselves to experiment with other more natural ways of healing the body.
Find a patch of grass at a local park and sit down with a book for 20 minutes, or maybe even do your gardening outside in bare feet. A great idea would be to meditate outside while sitting in the grass, thereby combining the amazing health benefits of earthing with the health benefits of meditation.
Nature has already given us everything we need to stay healthy and prevent sickness. Let’s start using it!
