If you feel that your child does not conform to the typical mold associated with their age group, then your child might actually be an old soul.
Although it might seem shocking and strange due to the unusual behavior of your child, having an old soul as a child can be quite an amazing experience.
It’s not just their innate wisdom, but also the unusual levels of stability they offer, especially to the unsuspecting — but lucky — parents.
So, if you think you might have an old soul in your family, these following signs will help you determine if your child really is an old soul.
Being able to understand the reason why your child is different will not just help you get closure, but also help you understand how to enjoy the little bundle of blessing you gave birth to.
1. They seem perpetually pensive and absorbed in their own world
While most younglings will be busy playing with other children of the same age and their love to be in playgroups will know no bounds, your child, on the other hand, may not be interested in similar activities.
They might seem to be dreamy, thoughtful and contemplative, giving off an impression of being in a perpetually pensive state, absorbed in their own world.
2. Old souls seem distinctly unique
If your child is an old soul, you will be feeling that something about them is different, even though you won’t be able to describe exactly what it is.
I think ‘otherworldly’ is the best word to describe them because they just don’t seem like any other kid their age and they tend to be in a completely different world.
3. They prefer the company of older people
Old souls are always more mature than their own age group and, if your child is an old soul, you will notice them enjoying the company of older people.
Such children are naturally inclined to befriend their teachers and within family social life, they will be more attached to their grandparents and other adults.
This is because they are born with superior cognitive abilities than their own age groups.
4. Sometimes, they are unable to connect with their own age group
Just like any other child, they too will try to connect with kids their own age but, gradually, they will lose interest in the things that tend to revolve around kids of their own age.
Unfortunately, this can result in them being picked on, as other children may see them as different, which usually leads to most old souls feeling like outcasts.
5. They can be quite inquisitive
Since children who are old souls are born with an innate wisdom, they naturally want to build on their knowledge and wisdom they already possess.
This usually leads to some incredibly inquisitive children, who will ask the most wonderful questions about the world and the things that interest them.
If you have a child with an old soul, you will often find them reading books, asking surprising questions, and just wanting to explore the world.
6. They prefer their own company
Old souls, despite their age, generally experience difficulty in integrating into the social dynamics of their peer groups. Their pensive natures only further their desire to avoid the trivialities associated with kids their own age.
Hence, despite having well developed social skills, you will find your child preferring their own company over other kids of the same age.
There is nothing to be worried about as your child simply doesn’t need external stimulation or enjoyment.
7. They have a problem with authority
Don’t worry if your old soul child seems to have a problem with authority. Since they are inherently more observant, astute and intelligent, they are less inclined to blindly follow authority, as most children do.
Due to this, they might get in trouble while growing up, as they will not adhere to illogical demands.
8. They can be surprisingly responsible and independent
One of the most surprising and noticeable characteristics of old soul children is that they are extremely responsible and reliable.
Many parents with old souls as their children tend to form a two way relationship with their children, where they can lean on their child for support.
However, if too many responsibilities are placed on a child, they will naturally seek freedom and distance.
9. Their temperament can make them either overachievers or underachievers
The temperament of an old soul child can play a huge role in determining whether they become overachievers or underachievers.
If your child is more emotional driven with creative tendencies, they are more likely to work hard in order to please you.
However, if they are more logical and cogent, then they are likely to rebel against the schooling system due to its apparent flaws, which become obvious to them.
So, do you think your child is an old soul?
Having an old soul as a child can create some extremely rich and interesting moments. If you would care to share your experiences with the rest of us, we would love to hear them.
