"The cathedral in the Spanish city of Salamanca was constructed in 1102, and is therefore one of the oldest such constructions in the world. It features magnificent stone carvings on all its walls, but one of them is a bit more special than the others, so to speak. It bears the depiction of what appears to be a fully dressed astronaut in a space suit, complete with details such as the sole of his shoes. Nobody knows how he got there, or what a 20th century astronaut is doing on the walls of a 12th century religious building.
Needless to say, the find has left all in a deep state of shock. There are, of course, numerous such mysteries in the world, ancient finds that have somehow caught us off guard, such as the old batteries found in Egypt, dated as being older than Christianity. But finding an astronaut carved between religious ornaments is no easy task to explain to conspiracy theorists, who, needless to point out, think governments have something to do with covering up the existence of aliens.
Some have argued in various writings that a good part of the technology and knowledge people have gained over time comes from extraterrestrial beings. And this would make a certain amount of sense, considering the advanced knowledge Egyptians displayed while building the pyramids.
The Inca benefited from revolutionary information, as well, when they built Machu Picchu, and the Mayan solar calendar is a true wonder of the world. Stonehenge in England is a nearly perfect solar observatory, and this makes people wonder how savages managed to raise such wonderful structures.
And some monuments depict people riding chariots in the sky. These are the gods, some of which have space helmets on their head. However, these questions will remain unanswered for a long time, and no solution is yet at hand from Spain." (news.softpedia.com)
(The most recent picture of the astronaut shows a damaged sculpture)
Possible explanation
The astronaut, along with other contemporary symbols was allegedly added in 1992 during restoration work on the cathedral. The person responsible for the restoration, Jeronimo Garcia, reportedly chose an astronaut as a fitting symbol of the twentieth century.
This theory is only to be found in a Portuguese article dated September 16, 2006, but quickly adopted by Wikipedia as FACT (see references):
"Its main entrance consists of 3 arcs, each leading to the 3 naves (sections) of the church. All three are richly carved. Among the ornate carvings on the façade is the incongruous likeness of an astronaut floating in space; it was added by an artist during restoration work in 1992 as a symbol of the 20th century."
Unfortunately, I was not able to find any records about Jeronimo Garcia, or pictures with the Salamanca cathedral before 1992. Help of any kind in this matter, is highly appreciated.
LATER EDIT:
Message from Marc, 27, Barcelona - Spain
"Hi there,
My name is Marc and I'm from Barcelona, Spain. I've been in Salamanca like a hundred times since I was a kid (I'm 27). The first time I visited Salamanca was definately before the Barcelona 1992 olympics, and I clearly remember how my father took me on his shoulders and showed me the astronaut carving.
I've also asked to my mother-in-law about the carving, and she told me that she visited Salamanca in the 1970's and the carving was already there.
So the Wikipedia "fact" seems to be a LIE."

It is weird that u haven't found any info about that Jeronimo Garcia person. But by looking at the astronaut it does look like a modern looking carving, like a modern world artist would make it. It looks really different from all the other carvings or paintings where they show possible aliens or ufo's, it's way more modern looking.
ReplyDeleteThe possible explanation sounds reasonable just as it sounds reasonable that wikipedia didn't look into it properly but used it anyway cos it makes things easier.

Greetings to everyone!
@Dear Merkx,
ReplyDeleteWhat makes me think that the sculpture may be recently added, is the print of the boots' soles.
I don't know if an ancient sculptor would be able to see or to later remember this distinct feature (that we are so familiar with).
@Dear Marc,
Thank you so much for your answer! I hope that more people will be able to confirm this.
If you are right, then this is huge!
Regarding Wikipedia, they are absolute supporters of the official, established LIES. It's not the first time I caught them red-handed and not the only person. Important figures, scientists and archaeologists are very frustrated by Wikipedia's approach on their work and discoveries.
Wikipedia is more of a manipulation and indoctrination tool, than a learning one.
There are many, many cases in which Wakipedia is lying, deleting or modifying information from reliable sources and replacing it with one that "fits" the criteria of mainstream standard. CHeck by yourself and use that information carefully. Cheers.

ReplyDeleteI have to say that when I first saw this picture, I was amazed as it looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteHowever on closer inspection I think the restoration idea seems credible for the following reasons. First I have to say that I am not an expert on stone sculpture but it is easy to see some discrepancies especially in the top picture.
There is a horizontal joint line above the figures head between two stones and the one above appears to be older than the one with the figure on it. If you look at the vertical edges on both stones, you can see that the one with the figure has crisp edges and the one above does not. Also the detail on both stones is different and do not appear to have been carved by the same hand, the upper stone is more finely carved and more ornate. The upper stone shows more erosion and age.
Also the second pic shows that someone has attempted to artificially age the new stone with damage.

ReplyDeleteno mistey here!
I am sorry, but it is not a reliable source for me. I am sure there is a reasonable explanation, but these articles are just perpetuating Wikipedia's disinformation.
DeletePlease, review Marc's statement as well. The astronaut costume is known to the general public after the so called "moon landing", and probably integrated into the cathedral's architecture in the 60s or 70s.
One thing is clear to me: Wikipedia's article is incorrect and offensive. There are students all over the planet using their deceiving articles as source for school projects.
Já vi fotos em outro site e de outra coluna que tem esculpidos carro, caminhão e van, o que também não era da época. Mistério

I've seen pictures on another site and another column that has sculpted car, truck and van, which was not the time. mystery
